Decades of scientific research suggest that therapy does indeed work, and that it works quite well.
First, there's the research that suggests that therapy in general, overall, works. Then there's the research into particular kinds of therapy that demonstrate that some of the many different schools or techniques of therapy work. Then there's research into which kinds of problems therapy works to resolve. Then there's research into which therapies work for which problems. Finally, there's therapy that indicates which therapists and which clients make the most progress in therapy.
As to how it works, the consensus seems to be that it happens in the space that is the relationship between the therapist and the client.
We'll review some of these bodies of research below, and I'll include some links for if you want to look into it further for yourself. This will be an ongoing project, so check back once in a while to see what's been added!
